The Church of San Marco in Monte Bertone, located within the Horti of the Almo Collegio Borromeo in Pavia, was constructed around 1174 according to written sources. Since excavations began in 2019, the entire perimeter of the church has been uncovered. Current efforts are focused on the internal area near the entrance. Here, research has revealed chamber tombs from the modern era along the side aisles, while the stratigraphy in the central area has brought to light traces of the original church and earlier layers, likely dating back to the early medieval period. This earlier phase includes spaces that were partially repurposed to support the structures of the Romanesque church, which are still under investigation.
The excavation is carried out under ministerial concession in collaboration between the Almo Collegio Borromeo and the University of Pavia.
