The activities of the teaching on Pre-Roman Italy

In the territory of Fondi, southern Lazio, the Pre-Roman Italy team is investigating a settlement that raises many questions. On a hill not far from the Roman foundation center, a circuit of walls in polygonal masonry formed by mighty blocks encircling almost the entire hill had already been identified in the past years. Two excavation campaigns have been carried out within the wall circuit, revealing a building with three rooms, characterised by at least two phases of life. The most evident phase at the moment is that of the late 4th-early 3rd century, which has yielded black glazed pottery and everyday use, as well as prestigious materials such as a fragment of alabastron in glass paste probably imported from the Mediterranean area. The last campaign has revealed an archaic phase, indicated above all by a so-called ‘focaccetta’ (small bread) of impasto ware, an object usually found in votive deposits. The nature and chronology of the settlement are therefore still to be clarified.
